Snow-Covered Car Care

Snow-Covered Car Care

by M.C. Millman

While a snow day may mean building igloos and drinking hot cocoa to some people, remember the responsibility that comes with the season's first significant snowfall.

While technically, it is not illegal to drive around with snow piled on the roof of your car, don't be that person driving around town. Take an extra few minutes to clear it off, along with all lights and windows. This is especially true with icy snow that can slide off your vehicle while driving and cause damage to others.

Remember that "Under New York State law, it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle with anything that obstructs the driver's view. Additionally, license plates must be visible, headlights should provide adequate illumination, and all lights should be visible to other motorists," according to the New York Department of Motor Vehicles

The New York State Police remind us, "Cleaning snow off a car is a daunting task, but it's crucial for your safety, the safety of other drivers and pedestrians."
