Suspect in New City Stabbing Incident Faces Mental Health Evaluation

By Idy Perl

As reported, 23-year-old Elijah Dean was arrested in relation to the stabbing in New City last week. The suspect’s lawyer said in a statement that he had been struggling with mental health issues and wasn’t consistent with his treatment, according to CBS News.

"Getting him treatment and keeping him compliant with his medication and treatment has been an issue. Anyone that knows him is in shock that he's charged with these offenses," his defense attorney said.

He will be undergoing evaluations to determine if he’s fit to stand trial.

The suspect also has unrelated charges pending that include endangering a child.

Police are continuing to investigate but say that at this time they don’t believe it was a hate crime.
