Slice and Spice Pizza Delivers Stacks of Pizzas for Hundreds of Firefighters at 4am

Lipa Rubin, the owner Slice and Spice, a pizza shop at 306 Saddle River Rd. in Airmont, had just gotten off of work after 1am last night, when an hour later, a tornado of sirens screamed from outside his window.

A fleet of fire engines from the Monsey Fire Department, which stands right next to his home, was on its way to extinguish the flames that had engulfed a house that was divided into three homes on East Willow Tree Road in Wesley Hills.

The fire was so large that the firefighters were soon helped out by hundreds of other firefighters from departments from Hillcrest, Spring Valley, Tallman, Thiells, New City, Stony Point, Suffern, and West Haverstraw.

Rubin’s first thought? 

The hardworking firefighters need pizza!

Grabbing his friend Monsey Fire Commissioner Yakov Fleigman and a couple of other helpers, Rubin and his friends hopped in a car, and drove back to the pizza shop for 45 minutes to make 24 cheese pizzas to deliver to the scene.

Although firefighters have picked up orders at Slice and Spice before, last night was the first time Rubin delivered fresh pies to the scene of a fire.

When the pizza chefs arrived, with a tall stack of steaming pizza boxes in hand, Rubin said, the firefighters were thrilled to see them.

Were the firefighters, who had worked for hours to put out the house that had gone up in flames, hungry?

“One thing I do know: they ate it,” said Rubin, who said the firefighters thanked him many times and were very grateful. “The pizzas were all gone.

“I have never seen so many people eating pizza at 4am!”

Some firefighters jokingly referred to Rubin’s famous dipping sauce when they told him, “You forgot the spicy mayo!”
