Shabbos House Fire in New Square
By M. C. Millman
Ershte Hilf and Hatzolah were dispatched to a house fire on Friday about an hour after the zman,
New Square Public Safety responded as well after the call came in from a Hatzoloh member who had passed the house and noted two children calling for help as their house was on fire.
The smoke-filled home presented a challenge for the volunteers to enter until a New Square security guard who was serving a shift for New Square Public Safety arrived at the scene. Being that the guard is also a Stony Point firefighter, he had his mask and a fire extinguisher with him in the car, so he was able to enter the house and begin to extinguish the blaze. He was followed by heroic Ershte Hilf members, and together, they were able to bring the fire under control.
Hatzoloh EMT's treated several volunteers for smoke inhalation at the scene.
The fire reportedly started from a garbage can and spread to the kitchen cabinets.
Upon their arrival, the Hillcrest Fire Department checked through the house, making sure that it was safe to return.
