In the aftermath of the spate of horrific mass shooting incidents that have taken place in recent weeks, lawmakers in Albany have allocated funds for police departments in the state in order to better combat gun violence.
The program is called the GIVE (Gun Involved Violence Elimination) initiative and supports police departments in seventeen counties in the state, including Albany, Broome, Chautauqua, Dutchess, Erie, Monroe, Nassau, Niagara, Oneida, Onondaga, Orange, Rensselaer, Rockland, Schenectady, Suffolk, Ulster and Westchester counties.
The New York State budget, passed in the legislature on April 9 of this year, totals $220 billion. $18.2 million of those dollars are allocated to GIVE. The Spring Valley Police Department, and county Sheriff's Office and Probation Department will share the $107,146 Rockland County received, as the country struggles to find an answer to this terrible scourge.
