New Jersey Debate over self-service Gas Stations Reignited

New Jersey is the only state with a complete ban on self-service gasoline, but lawmakers and advocates for the gas station and convenience store industry say it's time for a change.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced a bill Monday called the Motorist Fueling Choice and Convenience Act.

If passed, it would give drivers the option to self-serve.

Lawmakers want to be clear – it’s not a mandate and not eliminating full service, it's instead giving drivers the option to fill up themselves and save money.

“By providing a hybrid model, we can give consumers the option to do what they prefer when it comes to filling their gas tanks, while also giving them the opportunity to save money,” Assemblywoman Carol Murphy said in a statement.

This is the latest in a long line of efforts to drop the self-serve prohibition, all of which have failed.
