Clarkstown Bans Short-Term Rentals After Outsiders Bring Parties and Violence to Airbnbs

By Sarah Morgenstern

After short-term renters hosted parties that ended in violence in New City, Clarkstown voted Tuesday to ban short-term rentals, which are less than 29 days.

“We had a couple of incidents, where people were looking to rent houses and come up from outside of the area to host parties, Clarkstown town Supervisor George Hoehmann told “The Morning Show.”

The town’s already strong laws that control short-term rentals needed more teeth, Hoehmann said, after several Brooklyn men, who have been indicted, were arrested after opening fire on a single-family home that had been rented out, via Airbnb, in New City in late January.

Several people were in the home at the time, but, thankfully, no one was hurt. Clarkstown police secured several illegal weapons in the incident.

Hoehman said the town voted to ban short-term rentals on single-family, two-family, and multi-family homes.

“We are moving forward with that,” Hoehman said.
