Village of Spring Valley to Begin Yearlong Gas Main and Roadway Improvement Project

The Route 45 Complete Streets Improvement Project, a major gas main replacement project, will begin this summer. 

The project is a result of a Route 45 and Route 59 Pedestrian Safety Study for Pedestrian Improvements, the findings of which were reported in November of 2023. Orange & Rockland Utilities will make the main improvements to the gas main, replacing the 5,000-foot gas main and forty service lines in the project area. The majority of the proposed main will be located under replaced sidewalks.

"The village is thrilled to finally be able to begin work on this project," Village of Spring Valley Deputy Mayor Yisroel Eisenbach tells Rockland Daily. "The work is definitely critical for our village, and though it will be inconvenient while it is taking place, it will be very worthwhile for decades to come after it is completed. In the meantime, once the project is underway, drivers are asked to exercise patience and follow instructions while complying with the flagmen who will make the traffic experience as smooth as possible. "

Additional improvements are also planned, including road striping, fifteen new curb bump-outs, seventy new or reconstructed curb ramps, 7,600 feet of new sidewalks, five crosswalks, and four new traffic lights that will be in sync and operate via cameras and sensors to facilitate a smoother commute. The traffic lights will be replaced on Church Stree, Ewing Avenue, Hickory Street, and Eckerson Road.

After the completion of all of these projects, Route 45 will be milled and repaved. Repaving work will take place at the beginning of the summer of 2025. 

The entire project is expected to be completed next summer.
