Thousands Expected To Participate In Massive Monsey Free TEFILLIN Program

The celebrated Tefillin Awareness Project, also known as Hanacha K’halacha, is coming to Beis Medrash Ohr Chaim in Monsey in what is expected to be its largest event ever. The venue, located at 18 Forshay Road and commonly known as ‘Scheiner’s Shul’, will be hosting the program on Sunday morning, September 11th – the 15th of Elul.  

Hanacha K’halacha was founded by R’Avrohom (Bumie) Schachter in Adar of 2007 in an effort to ensure that people are performing the mitzvah of tefillin according to halacha.  Over the years, he has brought teams of experienced and qualified sofrim to visit shuls and yeshivas after shacharis minyanim on designated mornings to check and adjust the tefillin of the mispallelim. They adjust the placement of the shel rosh, shel yad, both kesharim, the blackness, width, and condition of the retzuos (straps), the tefiros (stitching), rebu’ah and more.  The service is free of charge to the participants, but sponsorships are appreciated.

An estimated 3,000 mispallelim daven Shacharis at Beis Medrash Ohr Chaim, where over twenty-five minyanim are held every fifteen minutes daily from zman vasikin until 12 pm.  The shul is known for its warm and inclusive atmosphere where all Jews are welcome.   

The event at Beis Medrash Ohr Chaim promises to be the largest Tefillin event in the history of the program.  R’Avrohom has enlisted twenty sofrim, five in each tent, to assist with the expected massive crowd.  “It’s going to be a very special day,” he says.  

The program has already been successfully implemented in over 800 shuls and yeshivas across America to date.  From Boro Park to Cincinnati, from Miami to Toronto, from summer camps to local mesivtas, the TAP program is widely recognized as a unique opportunity for members of klal yisroel to learn to perform the mitzvah properly.  “Don’t take it for granted that your tefillin are in tip-top shape,” says R’Avrohom.  “We found problems by ehrliche yidden of all ages who are trying to do the right thing.  Unfortunately, they were unaware of the details of the halacha.  Fortunately, we were able to help them.”
