Self-Driven - Port Authority Hosts Autonomous Vehicle Demonstration at JFK Airport

by Mindy Cohn

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is taking a second look at autonomous vehicles (AV) as the department is actively looking at where it can apply AV technology within its footprint.

Autonomous vehicles from a leading New Zealand-based company will be test driven at JFK Airport in June when the Port Authority hosts the country's first three-vehicle platooning demonstration at a U.S. airport. The demonstration will use eight-passenger driverless shuttles in a three-vehicle platoon in the JFK Long Term Parking Lot. The two autonomous vehicles are expected to travel closely together without any physical connection.

The Port Authority will additionally host a demonstration of two eight-passenger electric autonomous shuttles in a platoon in October. That demonstration will also take place at JFK. Both simulations will test how the technology can best serve passengers in the future.

The announcement of the AV demonstration was made on Tuesday, February 28, just one day before an American Airlines bus was stolen from a JFK parking lot as reported here by Rockland Daily.
