Rockland Writes: Addressing Address Issues

After reading Rockland Daily’s recent article: Important Reminder to Display Home Address Correctly in Case of Emergency on the importance of making sure your house or business number is easy to read, it hit me that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

With the overbuilding going on at full and unrelenting speed, we have a bigger problem than addresses that can’t be seen by emergency personnel. The problem is addresses that make no sense. There are streets where new buildings have been shoved in behind old buildings or where one side of the street is off by hundreds on the opposite side of the street. We have addresses that are skipping evenly by tens and then suddenly by fifty numbers with no rhyme or reason. There is just no logic to the system.

Perhaps in addition to harping on placing house numbers where they are clearly visible to emergency personnel, not to mention visitors and delivery folks, we can ask that street addresses undergo a recalibration every decade or so. Yes, I know it’s inconvenient, but so is wandering around looking for an address that you know has to be here somewhere but is next to impossible to find.

Who has the right address to address this issue for us?

Sincerely,

Number Challenged Resident
