Rockland County Fire & Emergency Services Holds Lithium-Ion Battery Failure Safety Demonstration
by M.C. Millman
Rockland County Fire & Emergency Services invited the media to view a live demonstration of a lithium-ion battery failure caused by simulated overcharging.
The demonstration took place yesterday afternoon and was given by fire instructors at the Rockland County Fire Training Center at 35 Firemen’s Memorial Drive in Pomona. It was meant to serve as a visual public safety warning to share with the public, especially those who currently have or may receive or give gifts containing lithium-ion battery devices.
Information shared included the fact that lithium-ion batteries are in many of our electronic devices, such as cellphones, scooters, tablets, laptops, e-cigarettes, and power tools, among many other items. The batteries are capable of storing large amounts of energy and may pose a threat of not being properly cared for, which can lead to the batteries being defective and failing, which is why It is very important to exercise caution when operating them and charging them.
At the first sign of a problem, users should stop using the device, such as if they notice a change in color or shape or excessive heat. If it is safe to do so, the device should be moved to a safe location, and a call should be placed to 911.
Lithium-ion batteries should not be put in the trash. They can instead be brought to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at the Fire Training Center in Pomona.
