Rockland Braces for Solar Eclipse: Here's What You Need to Know

The day of the much-anticipated solar eclipse has finally arrived! Weather conditions permitting, later today you’ll be able to see the moon pass in front of the sun, darkening the skies for a few brief minutes. 

The eclipse in Monsey will begin at around 2:30pm and end at 4:36 p.m., with the peak happening at around 3:15pm. The peak of the eclipse will last only 1 ½ to 3 ½ minutes. Although Rockland County is not in the direct path of the eclipse, about 90% of the sun will be covered by the moon. 

If you look up during that time, you’ll see the moon with the glow of the sun around its edges but be careful; even though the sun’s glare will be covered it’s still dangerous to stare into the solar eclipse. Only look at the eclipse directly if you have the special eclipse viewing glasses.

Contrary to the last solar eclipse in 2017, which was visible in states across the entire US, this year’s solar eclipse will be visible in only 12 states, all on the eastern side of the US, and will be the last solar eclipse seen in the US until 2045. The next total solar eclipse that will be visible in New York will be 2079!
