NY Residents Moving to NJ Have License Suspended for Failure to Surrender Plates

A New York based DMV expeditor is warning the public of a new rule that has cost many people their drivers license in the state of New Jersey after moving from New York.

As people move from New York to New Jersey, they often don’t think twice about throwing their New York plates away when they exchange them for New Jersey plates and switch to a New Jersey drivers’ license. But now, it seems, the New Jersey DMV is honoring a request by their counterpart in New York to suspend the licenses of drivers who fail to turn in their plates.

“In the last week alone, I have had nine clients who have had their New Jersey driver’s license suspended for failure to return their New York license plates to the NYS DMV,” A Thru Z DMV and Insurance to Rockland Daily. “They were sent letters by the New Jersey DMV warning them that their license will be suspended for failure to return their NY plates,” he said.

Due to this new cooperation between the motor vehicle departments in both states, drivers must turn in their plates to the DMV even when moving to New Jersey or face the possibility of the suspension of driving privileges.
