Most of NYS Rated As High Fire Danger
By M.C. Millman
The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has posted a NYS Fire Danger Map to create awareness of New York's high fire danger rating.
The NYS Fire Danger Map has a fire danger color key with five colors. Red for 'extreme', orange for 'very high', yellow for 'high', blue for 'moderate', and green for 'low'.
The NYS map is primarily yellow, indicating a 'high' risk.
According to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, a high fire danger means "All fine dead fuels ignite readily and fires start easily from most causes. Unattended brush and campfires are likely to escape. Fires spread rapidly, and short-distance spotting is common. High-intensity burning may develop on slopes or in concentrations of fine fuels. Fires may become serious and their control difficult unless they are attacked successfully while small."
