Local Hospital Safety Ratings Released: Only One Gets an 'A' Rating

The Leapfrog Group released their Hospital Safety Grades for spring 2023  yesterday.

The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization driving a movement for giant leaps for patient safety. The organization uses an academic grading scale with five letter grades to score nearly 3,000 hospitals nationwide on more than 30 patient safety measures.

According to the Leapfrog Group, the latest grades highlight a spike in healthcare-associated infections during the pandemic and declines in patient experience.

"The dramatic spike in HAIs reported in this Safety Grade cycle should stop hospitals in their tracks—infections like these can be life or death for some patients," said Leah Binder, president, and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. "We recognize the tremendous strain the pandemic put on hospitals and their workforce, but alarming findings like these indicate hospitals must recommit to patient safety and build more resilience."

There are only four hospitals within a 10-mile distance from Monsey, and only one, The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, received an 'A' rating. Montefiore Nyack Hospital and Hackensack Meridian Pascack Valley Medical Center received a 'B' rating. Good Samaritan Hospital received the lowest rating of the four, with a 'C' rating.

Anyone can use safety grades to pick a hospital and look at measurements that are important to them, such as hand washing, infection in the blood, and patient falls. To access the database, go here to look up additional details on hospitals and see the full breakdown of the ratings.
