Google's Anti-Semitic Definition for 'Jew' Sparks Outrage and Indignation

Google's Anti-Semitic Definition for 'Jew' Sparks Outrage and Indignation

By BZ Green

While it may be difficult to find a concise meaning for the word ‘Jew’ that would fit in a dictionary, the definition that appeared when people Googled the word on Tuesday sparked fear and outrage among Jews. It brought back some of the worst stereotypes invoked against Jews throughout the ages.

"Bargain with someone in a miserly or petty way,” was the best meaning the search engine could come up with to describe our People.

Upon the justifiable outrage leveled at google in the aftermath of the story, Google apologized, explaining that the definitions do not originate with the company itself. “Our apologies. Google licenses definitions from third-party dictionary experts. We only display offensive definitions by default if they are the main meaning of a term. As this is not the case here, we have blocked this & passed along feedback to the partner for further review,” said a Tweet from Google.

The definition was quickly changed to "a member of the people and cultural community whose traditional religion is Judaism and who trace their origins through the ancient Hebrew people of Israel to Abraham."

Indeed, tracing our origins through millennia as a Nation has gotten us used to plenty of this type of treatment—but we thought it could never happen in America. Increasingly, it seems, we are singled out for discrimination and denigration in a land that has served as a haven for so long.
