Clarkstown Reconsiders Term Limits for Local Electeds

By M. C. Millman

Eight years after Clarkstown became Rockland’s first government to create term limits for local electeds, including town board members, Clarkstown officials are rethinking the law enacted in January 2015.

In 2014,  Clarkstown Republicans collected more than 3,400 signatures for their petition for term limits which became law.

Revoking the term limits would be of benefit to the present Clarkstown Supervisor, George Hoehmann, and another council member who will both otherwise be unable to seek reelection in 2023.

The Town is reviewing whether the previously adopted law is too vague, which would mean no vote would be required to remove it as the law would have been invalid from the start. If a vote is necessary, four board members would need to vote for it.

Many Clarkstown residents are seeking a reasonable explanation for why the supervisor is now looking to overturn a law he advocated for eight years ago while insisting at the time that it was fair.
