Chaverim of Rockland Holds Annual Kids Safety Day

By M. C. Millman

It was a perfect day for the annual Chaverim of Rockland Kids Safety Day. The popular bike registration and fun fair event took place on Sunday afternoon, June 26, at Viola Park.

Several notable community officials attended this event including Assemblyman Mike Lawler, Town supervisor Michael Specht, Ramapo police chief Martin Reilly, and Rockland County Sheriff Lou Falco.

Owners of bikes, scooters, segues, and carriages registered their property with the police department. Registration assists in recovery if any are stolen. Free helmets donated by Dr. and Mrs. Steven Fessler were distributed. Over the years, the Fesslers have donated thousands of helmets to make safety a priority and encourage Monsey children to wear helmets while riding their bikes. Free reflectors sponsored by Town of Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht and the Town Board were given out as well as free swim bags.

Demonstrations included an all new Chaverim Search and Rescue presentation along with other safety education and awareness demonstrations. Presenters included the New York State Police; Rockland County Sheriff - K9 and Tactical Team; Town of Ramapo Police Department; Spring Valley Police; the U.S. Coast Guard, and Hatzolah of Rockland, all of whom came together to ensure the safety of Monsey’s children comes first.

“My kids have the best time year after year,” said one enthusiastic attendee.

A crowd favorite was the multitude of emergency vehicles with their doors wide open, allowing children to climb inside for hands-on viewing. Kids also enjoyed balloon rides, helium balloons, prizes, hayrides, blow up jumping houses, rides, cotton candy, slush, drinks, and ices.

The smooth running of the event was coordinated by Chaverim’s volunteers, who put in countless hours of hard work before, during, and after the day, once again displaying their continued devotion to the Monsey community.

The day focussed on showing children that fun and safety can be combined. This year’s Chaverim Kids’ Safety Day was co-sponsored by MedRite, Rockland Kosher Supermarket, Bikur Cholim, Stern Phycail Rehabilitation, Kleins Kosher, Ice Cream House, John to Go Upstate Produce, and the Monsey View.
