Rockland Responds: Town of Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht Comments on Request for Fencing Around Lake Suzanne

Following the near drowning of the boy on Suzanne Lake yesterday, I would like to know what it will take to get town officials to put up fencing around Lake Suzanne. This is not the first time somebody had to be rescued from that lake.

Sincerely,

Lake Suzanne Neighbor

Dear Lake Suzanne Neighbor,

Regarding yesterday's traumatic episode, we are all happy to hear the boy was not harmed, and we are extremely grateful to the members of Hatzoloh, Chaverim,  Ramapo Police, the Monsey Fire Department, and others who swiftly responded and rescued him.

We are fortunate to have scenic amenities in Town, with Lake Suzanne being one of them.   The Town does not install fences around them.

Willow Tree Pond, Children's Park, and Levy Park all have ponds that are not fenced. Fences sometimes keep people in, not out, especially when the Town only controls parts of the perimeter around Lake Suzanne, and someone intent on walking on the ice can just walk around them.

People should always use caution around any body of water and never assume it is safe to walk onto ice.

We are planning to upgrade the Lake Suzanne area and are working with the County and residents who live by the lake to come up with park areas and walkways for the site.

Michael Specht, Town of Ramapo Supervisor
