New Year Brings Higher Hotel Taxes for Those Visiting Nyack

New Year Brings Higher Hotel Taxes for Those Visiting Nyack

by Rockland Daily Staff

As of January 1, a new law is in effect, adding a 3% room occupancy charge for hotel guests in the Village of Nyack.

The goal of this tax is to fund tourism efforts and programs. The newest tax is an additional charge on top of the previous 3% county tax, put in place in 2012. This tax does not apply to Airbnb stays so it will only impact the two hotels and one motel in Nyack.

"We are trying to find ways to bring additional revenue to the Village that does not come from our residents," said Mayor Don Hammond. "We were talking with the folks from Hotel Nyack, and they said that 'everyone else does this,'" as reported in Rockland County Business Journal.

However, hotel room taxes are not imposed in the towns of Orangetown and Clarkstown.

Nyack Village passed the law last fall and will receive grant applications by summer to award grants funded by this tax for 2024. Rough estimates indicate that the Village could make $50,000 and $100,000 in tax collection for the next budget cycle, which begins in June, according to Rockland County Business Journal.

Visit Nyack is one of the grant beneficiaries of the 3% Rockland County hotel/motel occupancy tax put in place in 2012, which brings in close to $1 million annually. Visit Nyack uses grant funding for advertising to bring tourists to the area.
