"World Lion Day" Marked Today by Wildlife Organizations

The Tenth of August has been marked by big cat advocacy groups as World Lion Day, a day to celebrate this king of the animal kingdom.

The date was founded by Big Cat Rescue, the world’s largest accredited sanctuary dedicated to big cats, in conjunction with National Geographic.

The celebration is the brainchild of co-founders of Big Cat Rescue Dereck and Beverly Joubert who have begun to mark this date in the year 2013.

They explain that the lion species are now designated as "vulnerable," which is not the same as endangered. "Researchers estimate that there are between 30,000 and 100,000 lions left on planet Earth. Without significant intervention, there is a chance that they could find themselves on the endangered list alongside other species most at risk of extinction," their website says.

It is their hope that marking this date, and celebrating this most awesome of creatures, will help bring awareness to their plight, as they find themselves under threat from poachers and hunters, as well as a shrinking terrain.

"[We must] educate people who live near wild cats on the dangers and how to protect themselves. Humans and large species like cats can live in harmony together, but only if they understand how to do so," they said.
