Village of New Hempstead Eases up on Parking Restrictions

By Rockland Daily Staff

Thanks to Mayor Sicker and the Village of New Hempstead Board, winter street parking restrictions have been amended for the convenience of Village residents.

While street parking was previously forbidden from November through April, the amended Winter Parking Ordinance has eased those restrictions.

The new rules prohibit parking on a public street "whenever snow/sleet is falling, snow/sleet has accumulated, snow/sleet is predicted in the forecast, and/or the accumulation of snow/sleet is such that it covers the public street in the Village of New Hempstead, and/or that plowing or salting of the same is or may be required."

This change still supports the primary goal of assisting the Highway Department in clearing ice and snow during winter storms by keeping the roadway free of parked vehicles. Penalties for a first offense will not exceed $100 and will increase for each subsequent offense.

Harry Grossman, a New Hempstead resident, states this amendment is "much more convenient for residents, and, quite frankly, makes a lot more sense. Perhaps the rest of the town will want to follow suit?"
