Village of Montebello Mail Thefts Sets Residents on Edge

Residents in the Village of Montebello are asked to be on extra alert regarding their mail following an increase in mail theft in the area.

Not only was important mail stolen recently, but checks were also cashed from the mail that was stolen. Residents also reported seeing someone drive around Montebello yesterday, opening mailboxes as he went along..

The United States Postal Service warned residents against sending checks in the mail in the wake of a steady rise in check fraud incidents back in June, as reported by Rockland Daily here.

One suggestion to avoid mail theft and especially check fraud is to opt for electronic payments when possible. If you cannot avoid mailing checks, using a secure mail drop location like the inside of a post office is recommended. Another way to avoid mail theft is to be sure to promptly pick up your mail and not leave letters or packages at your door or in your mailbox.

If you witnessed or have fallen victim to mail fraud, report it to the United States Postal Inspection Service here or call 1-877-876-2455. Also, please make sure to file a police report.
