United Airlines is Taking Off With Parents Who Can Now Seat Children Beside Them at No Extra Charge

by Mindy Cohn

In response to the ongoing complaints from parents regarding the added costs associated with purchasing seats to ensure children are seated next to parents during a flight, United Airlines announced a new seat map feature to assist families flying with children under 12 in finding seats together.

The free feature for Basic Economy tickets was announced by the airline on Monday.

United stated in its news release that the new seat map technology would allow parents to locate available adjacent economy seats for children under twelve traveling with parents at the time of booking. It will also open up complimentary upgrades to other available seats as needed. If side-by-side seats are unavailable, passengers can switch to another flight with adjacent seats in the same cabin at no charge.

United Polaris, First Class, and Economy Plus seats are not included in the new family seating policy change, which is set to go into effect in March.
