Tragic New Years Car Accident in Haverstraw

Rockland Daily Staff

At approximately 1:30 am on New Year's Day,  the Haverstraw Police department was dispatched to the kayak launch area of Beach Road for a call regarding a motor vehicle accident with injuries.

When they arrived, the officers noted a car occupied by three women up on an embankment on the north side of Beach Road. The sole survivor of the tragedy was the driver, a 64-year-old Haverstraw resident. She reported that she had made a right turn at the kayak launch area when the car slid off the roadway after she lost control.  Her sister, the 65-year-old backseat passenger from Stony Point was pronounced dead at the scene. The front passenger was the driver's mother, an 87-year-old, also from Stony Point. She was transported to Nyack Hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.

The driver passed both the field sobriety test and an alcohol breath test. It is presumed that rain and fog played a role in the accident.

The identities of all individuals have been withheld until notifications are made to family members.

The Town of Haverstraw Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Rockland County Sheriffs Office and the New York State Police.
