Town of Ramapo Launches Taxi Permit Program

by Chana Weinman
In response to the many concerns involving taxis over the past few months in Rockland, as reported by Rockland Daily here, the Town of Ramapo recently voted to establish the Ramapo Taxi and Limo Commission.
The new commission is a regulatory body meant to enhance taxi and limousine services within Rockland to ensure safety. Ramapo also passed a law requiring every taxi to apply for a Town of Ramapo Taxi permit sticker for each vehicle. Requirement include all taxi drivers undergoing a background and license check. Additionally, all taxis have to have valid New York State livery plates and inspections. No tinted windows will be allowed, and all vehicles must have a partition between the driver and the passenger.
Inspections for the required Town of Ramapo Taxi Permit began today. The first taxis to arrive for inspection of their vehicles hailed from Arrive Taxi and Excellent Taxi. After an inspection, each of their taxis received the bright green Town or Ramapo sticker to place in the taxi's window where it will be visible to riders. Each sticker has a unique permit number, so riders can easily identify the taxi they utilize, making their trip safer.
Beginning in 2024, all taxis in operation throughout the county will have to bear the Ramapo taxi permit sticker or they will be ticked and removed from service.
All taxi services that want to be licensed in the Town of Ramapo must visit the Town of Ramapo's website to apply for a license and subsequently have their vehicle inspected and tagged. The taxi commission is overseeing the Town of Ramapo taxi permit inspections.
