This Year's National Move Over Day Highlights Additions to NYS Move Over Law
by M.C. Millman

This year's National Move Over Day took place this past weekend, a few weeks after New York State expanded New York State's Slow Down and Move Over requirement.

National Move Over Day takes place annually across the United States on the third Saturday of October. But while the law initially covered tow trucks, police cars, and emergency and first responders, the newly expanded version includes all vehicles stopped on the road or on the shoulder of the highway.

The new law requires drivers to exercise caution when approaching a disabled vehicle and will go into effect in March 2024.

AAA reports that between 2016 and 2020, more than 1,700 people were hit while outside of a disabled vehicle in the U.S., resulting in 37 deaths in New York State alone.

The new law is meant to reverse that trend.
