Spring Valley’s Building Codes Office Issues a Hefty Fine of Nearly $40,000

Spring Valley’s Office of Buildings and Codes (OBC) has issued its first fine, and it is a big one.

After inspecting the property at 3 George Street, which housed nine families that comprised approximately 24 residents, including five children, the OBC found 17 violations of the New York State Uniform Codes.

In addition to illegal housing, the OBC found hazardous electrical wiring, before presenting the owner with a $39,250 fine: due immediately.

If the fine is not received within 30 days, legal action will be taken to collect the funds, the ticket said.

“We hope this penalty sends a clear message to property owners in the Village of Spring Valley that we have zero tolerance for egregious violations putting lives at risk,” said County Executive Ed Day. “If this landlord does not willingly pay the fine that has been imposed we will take swift legal action.”

OBC Director Ed Markunas said, “My office has been tasked with protecting the health and safety of village residents, visitors, and first responders.

“I’m confident our swift action against irresponsible property owners like this will accomplish that in time.”
