Speed Awareness Week Results in More Than 25,000 Tickets

by Rockland Daily Staff

Last week was 'Speed Week", with 25,199 traffic tickets administered during a special traffic enforcement campaign.

The New York State Police conducted this campaign from Monday, August 15, 2022, to Sunday, August 21, 2022. Their goal was to target speeding, distracted driving, and violations of the Move Over Law.

State troopers targeted drivers across NYS that were speeding and driving aggressively, along with impaired and distracted drivers, vehicle occupants not properly buckled up, and violations of the Move Over Law, which requires drivers to use due care to avoid a collision when approaching an emergency or hazard vehicle.

In total, state troopers issued 14,008 tickets for speeding, 531 for distracted driving, and 476 for Move Over Law violations. They also arrested 214 people for drunk and impaired driving. In addition to these tickets, state police responded to 206 personal injury crashes, five of which were fatal.

The number of tickets this year during "Speed Week" is lower than last year when state police issued 32,922 total tickets, 18,358 of which were for speeding. However, Speed Week lasted nine days in 2021, compared to the seven days in 2022.
