On Sunday evening, an emergency mass gathering took place in New Square, at the behest of the Rebbe, shlit’a, and in conjunction with the Zedek organization to aid the suffering Jews of Ukraine.
The Skverer chassidus has its roots firmly planted in Ukraine, where the town of Skvyra is situated, and where the chassidus thrived for two centuries before being transplanted to America. The Admorim of the chassidus are buried there, and regular pilgrimages of chassidim journey there in order to be mispalel.
Reb Moshe Margareten, founder of Zedek, spoke about the activities of the organization to aid those who have left the country, as well as those unable to leave. More than one hundred thousand dollars have been spent on food and water alone. Hundreds of thousands have been spent on rescue activities.
In his message to the askonim, the Rebbe said: ‘The situation is public knowledge, and it is unnecessary to elaborate on the importance of this cause. I simply want to afford Yidden the opportunity to take part in this. The Yidden over there are in danger, and there is a lot being done to rescue as many of them as possible... it is a mitzvah of pidyon shevuyim.”
