The Rockland County STOP-DWI office announced that it has purchased new roadside upgraded breathalyzers which have already been distributed to the Rockland County Sheriff's Patrol and eight Rockland County police departments.
DWI, or Driving While Intoxicated, is a crime, and DWI laws are strictly enforced in New York State. Penalties include loss of driving privileges, fines, and possible jail time.
An individuals degree of alcohol impairment depends on five factors:
- Body weight
- Gender
- The amount of alcohol drank
- Length of time spent drinking
- If food was eaten before or while drinking
The mission of the Rockland County STOP-DWI Office is to reduce the incidence of intoxicated driving. Rockland's sheriff and police departments now have all the necessary equipment to conduct roadside stops suspected of DWI.
The STOP-DWI office also supports the departments during campaigns and when departments want to maintain high visibility involving sobriety checks and checkpoints at critical times during the year.
