Rockland County Sheriffs Office Advises Residents to Text 911 if They Cannot Call

By M. C. Millman

The Rockland County Sheriff’s Office shared today with the public that if you are unable to call 911 in an emergency, you can text instead.

There are many reasons texting may be the preferred method to contact 911. For starters, texting is the preferred option for those who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have speech problems.

Texting is also recommended for those who cannot speak out loud because they are hurt or sick or in danger, such as when speaking out loud may make a situation worse. It is also a better option for those who cannot make a call due to a poor cell signal.

To text 911, enter the numbers ‘911’ in the ‘to’ field and begin the text by stating your exact location. A trained emergency dispatcher will help you from there.
