Rockland County purchased 13.72 acres in New City as part of the county’s Open Space Acquisition Program.
The program was first launched in 1999 by former County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef to acquire areas of scenic beauty, environmentally sensitive lands, farms, and Hudson River waterfront areas for Rockland.
The County invited residents to submit applications providing Open Space Acquisition Program suggestions, as reported by Rockland Daily here.
176 and 180 South Mountain Road, a mostly vacant piece of land with wetlands in New City, was purchased from William and Edward Schmidt for $1.794 million as designated parkland, which is prohibited from being used for any other purpose.
The first purchase for the Open Space Acquisition Program was made of 3.34 acres situated to the west of Route 45 and the east of the Palisades Parkway in Pomona Pomona this past April, as reported by Rockland Daily here. The second Open Space Acquitions Program purchase was of a vacant residential property at 20 New Valley Road in New City from Davies Farm Inc.,
Twelve additional nominated parcels are currently under consideration.
