Rockland County Prepares to Fund Pomona Animal Shelter with $18 Million

By: Rockland Daily Staff

Founded in 1973, Hi Tor Animal Care Center, located in Pomona, takes in over 2,000 animals each year and is the only open managed admission shelter in Rockland County.

The decrepit building is in dire need of replacement, and government officials had previously pledged a little under $8 million, which would be added with other sources of funding, to raze the current building and replace it with a new state-of-the-art shelter.

However, in a recently-proposed budget, the county may increase its commitment by $10 million.

Groundbreaking has already been held last October, and the shelter is set to go from its current size of 4,000 sq. feet to 14,000.
