Rockland County Places Cap on Gas Tax to Curtail Soaring Prices
In addition to the NYS gas tax suspension, Rockland County is placing a cap on the sales tax it collects on gasoline to alleviate the soaring prices and inflation, Ed Day announced Thursday.
The county will only charge its 4% gas sales tax to the first $2 of each gallon purchased from June 1st through Feb 8, 2023, under the plan.
This will save consumers approximately 8 cents per gallon based on current prices.
"Between the record inflation, rising gas prices, and the pandemic, our families need help now, and Rockland County leadership worked expeditiously to deliver it," Day said. "The role of government is to create an environment where residents can thrive, not to make money or profiteer off families feeling the duress of a strained economy."
Rockland officials chose not to suspend the county's motor fuel tax entirely, to avoid the possibility of a major deficit in the 2022 budget.
