Rockland County Government Amends Licensing for Home Improvement Contractors

Rockland Daily Staff

Rockland County Consumer Protection Director Jim Elcik joined Rockland County Executive Ed Day last week in approving an amendment to the rules and regulations of the licensing of Rockland home improvement contractors.

The amendments include the addition of a general contractor exam to ensure that the applicant possesses the required construction experience. The exam is a national standard. Additionally, the maximum monetary contract level of an A6 general contractor has been raised from $100,000 to $300,000, which now covers all phases of home improvement and employs subcontractors for contracts under $300,000. Lastly, residential soft washing services will be required to acquire a home improvement license. Soft washing is essentially the same as power washing with a lower PSI and puts workers in the same liability as power washing.

The changes were adopted by the Home Improvement Licensing Board and will take effect 45 days from the date the County Legislature adopts it.
