Rockland County February Electric Bills Increase from Last Month

By M.C. Millman

After Orange & Rockland Utilities projected that customers would pay an average of 24.8 percent higher than last winter for heat from natural gas and an average of 16.6 higher for electricity, electricity costs continue to increase, with February bills topping January's.

O&R residential customers can expect a February electric bill that is 6.5 percent higher than a month ago. However, gas heating bills are expected to be 8.3 percent lower than they were in January.

Residents can take heart in the fact that it could be worse, as New York ranks 26th among the 50 states when it comes to the cost of electricity, according to SaveOnEnergy, an energy market research website's January report. Of the ten states listed as having the lowest electricity bills, the closest to home is New Jersey at number ten, with New Hampshire and Connecticut soldiering through among the top ten states when it comes to electricity costs.
