Rockland County Celebrates Transfer of Land to Ramapough Lunaape Nation

by Rockland Daily Staff
Rockland County Government representatives joined the Ramapo Munsee Land Alliance, the Ramapough Lunaape Nation, and The Land Conservancy of New Jersey at a ceremony held at the Sweetwater Cultural Center in Stony Point last week to celebrate the transfer of the Tahetaweew or Split Rock Mountain located in the Ramapo Mountains back to the Ramapough Lunaape Nation.
The historic transfer marks the first time since before the American Revolution that the land was returned to its original inhabitants.
"As I've said countless times," County Executive Day said during the ceremony, "safeguarding this sacred ground is the right thing to do for our neighbors, the Ramapo Lunaape, and for all people who want to make sure this important place is preserved now and for future generations."
