Ramapo Police Department Celebrates 91 Years of Serving and Protecting the Community

By Sarah Morgenstern

The Ramapo Police Department (RPD), which was created on May 1, 1931, today celebrates 91 years of serving and protecting the town of Ramapo.

The RPD, which said it “truly appreciates the community’s support and the department’s dedication” tweeted a photo of the Ramapo Town Board’s April 15 motion, which was typed on a typewriter, to create the police department.

The 1931 members of Ramapo Town Board, who met at the town clerk’s office in Suffern, also appointed Abe Stern, the RPD’s first chief of police, with a yearly salary of $2,400.

The resolution also appointed four police officers, who earned 75 cents per hour, for one year: beginning 91 years ago today.
