Orange & Rockland Prepares for Summer

M.C. Millman

Orange & Rockland Utilities (O&R) announced they invested nearly $180 million this year to upgrade infrastructure, enhance grid resilience, and strengthen their system against extreme weather events.

While preparing for summer's peak electricity demands, the company's investment also supports the development of new energy efficiency and clean energy projects.

Over the past ten years, O&R has invested almost $1 billion in electric system maintenance and reliability projects.

"We work every day to prepare O&R's electric system to be as reliable, resilient, and safe as possible to meet the summer's high demand for electricity.," said O&R President and CEO Robert Sanchez. "As part of that mission, O&R is helping the communities we serve meet their clean energy goals by leading the transition to a low carbon future."

O&R's clean energy projects include the Pomona Battery Storage Project. The project was an electric battery storage project to accommodate energy use during summer peak demand periods in the community of Pomona.

O&R recounts that it dispatched electricity from the battery into the community 16 times to provide local load support during summer peak electric demand periods.

Other projects include the Underground Electric Reliability Projects, such as the $3.5 million storm hardening and load relief project in Monsey along East Saddle River Road to Route 306.
