NYS Thruway Temporarily Reopened Following Dangerous Live Wires on Road

BY: Rockland Daily Staff

At Approximately 2:00pm this afternoon, a high-tension electric line behind the J Lot in West Nyack snapped and landed on other wires, and was dangling above the New York State Thruway. The roadway was immediately shut down, and traffic was backed up for miles in both directions.

Chaverim and other emergency response organizations urged the public to avoid the area if at all possible. Traffic was diverted onto Route 59 and the Palisades parkway, as O & R Utilities worked on the scene along with emergency crews from local fire departments.

At about 4:00, the following notice went out from the town of Clarkstown: NYS Thruway is reopen in both directions temporarily with lane closures. It will be closed again in both directions to effectuate repairs. We are informed that will occur later this evening and will take some time to complete. Local roads are experiencing heavier than normal volume. Clarkstown police are assisting at major intersections to ease traffic flow."

The township promised more updates as the evening unfolded.
