The New York State Department of Transportation is reporting that it is better prepared for snow this winter than in winters past, having hired hundreds of plow drivers to man the snow and salt trucks throughout the state.

They were able to make these hires—while they were short a couple of hundred drivers last year—due to an increase in infrastructure spending, which enabled the State to raise wages. “We have an outstanding group of individuals who have come on board,” state Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said. “We have hired over 400 over the last year.

This comes as a number of counties in upstate New York will already experience “lake effect” snow, which is expected to dump 6-12 inches in areas around Lake Ontario.
