New Yorkers Vote for Newly Redesigned License Plates

By Yehudit Garmaise

New Yorkers can cast their votes to choose among three different newly redesigned license plates that express the state’s commitment to providing compassionate help to victims of domestic violence, Gov. Hochul announced on Friday.

The three different license plate design-options, which the governor said, “reflect the strength and resilience of survivors and the commitment New York state makes to support them,” can be viewed and voted on at https://opdv.ny.gov/new-york-state-end-domestic-violence-license-plate-redesign-contest.

The Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (OPDV), which is launching the contest to celebrate its 30th anniversary, will announce the winning design in October, which is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

October is also the month in which New Yorkers can begin to order their new license plates that feature the winning design from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website and local DMV locations.

Revenue from the license plates will support OPDV's continued work to end domestic violence through public awareness and programming that the agency plans to be “more survivor-centered, more trauma-informed, and more culturally responsive.”

"In New York, there is no place for violence, and that undoubtedly includes mental, physical, and emotional domestic violence," said Gov. Hochul.

"Survivors are the strongest among us, and as we celebrate OPDV's anniversary we remember how far we've come and the work still to be done in eradicating this abhorrent violence.

“My administration will never stop advocating for victims of violence, and I encourage New Yorkers to show their support by voting for their favorite commemorative plate."
