New Safeguards Adopted by FAA After Computer Outage Shut Down Flights in January

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration told lawmakers it has adopted new safeguards after the January 11 computer outage, which halted more than 11,000 flights for the morning. 

The January 11 fiasco was the first nationwide ground stop of departing flights since September 11, 2001.

Changes include those made to the system to prevent any corrupt files from damaging the backup database.

The FAA's newly instituted policies also include requiring at least two individuals to be present during the maintenance of the NOTAM system, including one federal manager.
