Natural Gas Pipeline Expansion Meets With Resistance Given Its Proximity to Indian Point

by M.C. Millman
Just when you thought things were quieting down at Indian Point after Holtec was banned from discharging radioactive nuclear wastewater into the Hudson River, as reported by Rockland Daily here there's a new problem brewing near the shuttered nuclear plant.
Climate activists have begun to rally near the decommissioned Indian Point nuclear plant in Buchanan to protest plans to expand the Algonquin Pipeline near the facility.
Enbridge, the pipeline owner, is looking to boost capacity along the Algonquin Pipeline through Project Maple. The Project Maple plan's goal is to replace existing underground pipes with larger ones while adding secondary lines and expanding compressor stations between New Jersey and Massachusetts.
Opponents of the proposal are concerned with the increased natural gas flowing near Holtec's Indian Point facility and are calling on the governor to ensure the submission does not pass.
Project Maple will require federal approval from the U.S. Energy Regulatory Commission before it can become a reality.
