Monsey Resident Turns Moments of Terror and Pain into a Life-changing Encounter

Dovi Sofer of Monsey-based Culinary Depot was walking innocently into a hotel in Miami, where he was attending the eCAP Summit, where hundreds of healthcare industry leaders were gathered to strike deals and create alliances.

“Nearby was a man holding two black Rottweilers on a leash. I must have startled the dogs as I walked behind them… because in an instant, they had pulled loose from their owner, and had knocked me to the ground, biting me all over, as the hapless owner tried desperately to pull them off.”

Eventually, Dovi was able to kick the dogs off of him, and the owner gave him his number, and walked away with his dogs, while he proceeded to the hotel. Horrified bystanders urged to him to file a police report—which could have resulted in confiscation of the dogs.

“Before long the owner returned,” Dovi relates. “He was shaking and in tears, imploring me to spare his dogs. He explained that he had only recently lost a dog to cancer, and he could not bear the loss of another companion. He mentioned that his parents were Holocaust survivors from Poland, and I asked him when was the last time he had donned tefillin, to which he replied, ‘never.’”

Dovi asked him whether he would like to put them on now, assuring him that it would give him the strength at this difficult time in his life—to which the man happily acquiesced.

Thus, moments of fear and pain were transformed into forgiveness and holiness, as two Yidden parted as friends on a sunny street in Miami.
