Monsey Memories: Snapshots from Yeshiva Spring Valley 1968

By: Yitzy Fried

Fifty-five years ago, a group of young Monsey boys graduated from the legendary Yeshiva of Spring Valley, which had been founded fifteen years previously in 1943. The mossad is now eighty years old and has graduated thousands of talmidim from Rockland County during this time.

A few months ago, a historian from Monsey came across the yearbook of 1968, giving us a glimpse into a faraway time in the history of the yeshiva and in the Monsey community of that time.

The yearbook was called “Tifarteinu,” and it featured a class of twelve graduates who came from various backgrounds—all of whom absorbed the yeshiva’s unique tradition and had their futures ahead of them:

Avrohom Schechter: Avromie is our assistant editor. He plans on attending Mesifta Beis Shraga. He enjoys all subjects and excels in math. He enjoys all sports. We are sure whatever he attempts will be with hatzlocha.

Emil Stern: Emil is the co-secretary of our yearbook. He collects stamps and coins and enjoys all sports. He plans to attend Mesifta Beis Shraga and hopes to become a medical doctor.

Aron Tendler: Aron has been with us for five years. He enjoys baseball and swimming and excels in science. He hopes to become a rabbi and a scientist. Although undecided about his future yeshiva, we are sure he will make a good decision.

Michael Jay Katz: Mike is the business manager of our yearbook. His hobby is stamp collecting. He plans to attend the Talmud Academy of Philadelphia and hopes to become a lawyer.

Sidney Michael Reisman: Sidney enjoys and excels in all sports. His hobbies are stamps and model rocketry. He hopes to become a pharmacist.

Menachem Schachter: Menachem, our Hebrew editor, enjoys baseball and ping pong. He plans to attend the Talmudical Academy of Philadelphia and hopes to become an engineer.

Sanford E. Frankel: Sandy, as he prefers to be called, plans to attend Yeshiva University.

Irwin Gasner: “Shy,” as he is known by all, has been with us since kindergarten. He plans to attend Yeshiva Torah Vadaath, and hopes to become a lawyer.

Avrohom Arnold Hoschander: Avrohom hails from Rochester. … he plans to attend the Yeshiva of Scranton and would like to become a doctor.

Martin Howard Bodner: Marty has been with us since fourth grade. He enjoys reading and basketball. He plans to attend the Talmudical Academy of Philadelphia and hopes to become a nuclear physicist.

Jacob Israel Edelman: “Sruli,” as he is called, is the co-secretary of our yearbook… he plans to attend Yeshiva Achei Tmimim of Montreal.

Israel Zuber: Izzy enjoys and excels in social studies. He plans to attend either Ner Israel of Baltimore or the Talmudical Academy of Philadelphia and hopes to become a recording engineer.

A number of these boys are surely out there and have hopefully attained the dreams they harbored at that time and even exceeded them.
