Monsey Fire Department to Host Fire Prevention Open House

M.C. Millman

In recognition of Fire Safety Month, the Monsey Fire Department will hold its annual Fire Prevention Open House on Sunday, October 23.

The free event will highlight the safety messages shared throughout the year and allow the fire department to engage the public in discussions of potential fire dangers, showcase tips on preventing home fires, and encourage discussion on safety plans and emergency escape routes. It will take place from one p.m. to six p.m. at the Monsey Fire Department at 16 Grove Street.

"The fire department is here for emergencies," Raphael Ziegler, Firefighter Engineer for 26.5 years and Chairman of the Fire Prevention Committee, tells Rockland Daily. "But we're also here to teach people how to keep themselves safe and to recognize when and how to mitigate a dangerous situation. This event gives us the opportunity to communicate and teach the public all those things as we want the community to be safe. That's what we're all about."

Interactive displays such as the smokehouse, a maze filled with party smoke simulating a smoke-filled environment, will teach the objective of "Stay Low and Go!" as kids can work through the maze to escape the house.

There will also be a display of electrical fire props showing true-to-life hazards which resulted in real fires. Exhibits include a burned-out outlet that caused a real fire after being overloaded from too many items being plugged in; a lightbulb that caused a fire after being covered with a blanket; and an extension cord similarly overloaded.

Attendees can explore fire trucks, don fire gear for pictures, and view lifesaving equipment. There will be live demonstrations, including a cooking fire demo, and giveaways, including coloring books, fire hats, key chains, and safety brochures.
