Living Legacy: Rebbe Nachman of Horodenka, zy”a

One of the most famous talmidim of the holy Ba’al Shem Tov, Rebbe Nachman was referenced by his holy Rebbe as “my trusted confidante, a kadosh v’tohor. His 248th yohrtzeit falls on 2 Tammuz.

He was born around the year 1679 in a small Galician town call Zolkova. Through his father, Rebbe Yitzchok of Zolkova, he was a descendant of the Maharal and through him to Dovid Hamelech.

After his marriage, he was drawn close to the Ba’al Shem Tov through a brother-in-law. He would subsequently be meshadech with his rebbe, and his grandchild and namesake who came forth from this marriage was none other than Rebbe Nachman of Breslov.

He was a great ba’al yisurim who endured much suffering. Nevertheless, he was always joyful. His mantra, which he would always repeat, was: “Everything is good, and everything is for the good”. In later years, this slogan was hung above his kever in Teveria.

He was also known as a great ba’al ruach hakodesh and ba’al miracle worker.

Rebbe Nachman was known for his fervent love for Eretz Yisroel, and would always speak of ascending to the holy land. He made multiple trips there, ultimately settling there in year 1764.

He came together with other talmidim of the Besht, such as Rebbe Meir of Premishlan and Rebbe Shamshon of Shepetivka, and their journey caused great ripples among the Yidden of Russia.

He had been in Mezibuz during the passing of his Rebbe, the Ba’al Shem Tov. Upon returning from the cemetery, he was joyful, saying that his Rebbe came to him and gave his blessing to ascend to Eretz Yisroel. This came after many years that the Ba’al Shem Tov discouraged him from leaving.

Rebbe Nachman was niftar on beis Tammuz of the year 1765, one year after fulfilling his dream of ascending to Eretz Yisroel.

He was interred in the cemetery in Teveria, in what is today known as the “section of the talmidei Ba’al Shem,” and his resting place remains a great attraction for thousands who come to be mispalel there each year, centuries after his passing.
